How to Analyse Amazon Competitors Without Copying Them

Don't Ask “How Can I Copy This?”
When researching Amazon, it's tempting to find the bestselling competitor and copy:
- Their product
- Their keywords
- Their images
- Their pricing
I think that's the wrong question.
I ask:
What can the market teach me?
Start With the Product
Compare:
- Materials
- Sizes
- Variations
- Accessories
- Packaging
- Features
Then ask:
Where are the genuine differences?
Read the Negative Reviews
This can be one of the best sources of product research available.
If hundreds of customers repeatedly complain:
“The handle breaks.”
that's product-development information.
Look for patterns. Not one angry review.
Analyse Price Positioning
Don't simply ask:
Who's cheapest?
Ask:
What does the customer get for the price?
A premium-priced competitor might prove customers will pay more for the right benefits.
Analyse Their Listing
Review:
- Main image
- Secondary images
- Title
- Benefits
- A+
- Reviews
Ask what they communicate particularly well. Then ask:
What are they failing to explain?
That's potentially your opportunity.
Analyse Keywords
Competitor keyword research can reveal:
- Primary category terms
- Long-tail searches
- Use cases
- Customer language
But relevance matters. Just because a competitor ranks for something doesn't automatically mean it's right for your product.
Analyse Their PPC Presence
Search your important keywords manually. Who repeatedly appears? Are particular competitors:
- Dominating Top of Search?
- Targeting your product pages?
- Defending their brand?
This gives clues about competitive intensity.
Look for a Positioning Gap
The goal is not to create:
Competitor Product + Slightly Different Colour
It's to understand whether you can offer something meaningfully better or clearer. That might be:
- Better value
- Better feature
- Better design
- Better bundle
- Better positioning
- Better target customer
